Dear Readers, September issue of Times of Agriculture magazine is focused on the recent reforms in Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, and their potential impact on both Indian agriculture and farmers.
As we all know, the agriculture sector — considered the backbone of India’s economy — has faced numerous policy changes over the years. However, the time has come to align GST with the realities of agriculture. Under the current GST structure, the tax rates on seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural machinery, etc., are not only increasing farmers’ costs but are also acting as a barrier to making agriculture more competitive.
Therefore, there is a need for a simple and transparent system under which agricultural inputs are either taxed at zero percent or at very minimal rates, in order to transform the condition of both agriculture and farmers. Today, as we talk about Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and sustainable agriculture, it becomes necessary that our tax policies support both the increase of farmers’ income and the productivity of agriculture. We hope that in the coming times, GST reforms will bring new momentum and strength to the agricultural sector.
